The East Riding of Yorkshire village of Patrington lies in the Holderness area of the county. It is located some 9 miles from Hedon and just 4 miles from Withernsea. The village held its first steeplechase meeting on Friday 7th April 1843 when the Sweepstake was won by Lady Harriet, who defeated Rat Trap and Louisa. Two years later, on Wednesday 26th March 1845, the principal event, a Steeplechase over 4 miles, was won by Mr H Lambert’s Romance. In 1854 the village got its own railway station on the Hull to Holderness line which enabled it to further promote its own race meetings in the 1860s. The first meeting of this second spell of racing was held in 1861, although it was not held in the village, but further along the east coast at Holderness. The meeting was deemed a success and racing continued for the next 5 years until a final meeting on Thursday 5th April 1866. |
